Marika Schmiedt
As part of her fellowship, Marika Schmiedt researched how the VBKÖ (Association of Women Artists) dealt with its Nazi past and is interested in continuities and structures. The result was an exhibition in which the catalog "Sprache kommt vor der Tat. Zusammenhang von Sprache, Rassismus, Ökonomie und Macht" by Marika Schmiedt was also presented. The Holocaust of Roma and Sinti by the Nazi regime is at the center of her artistic exploration, which she deals with in a way that is not satisfied with memory alone.
Marika Schmiedt is a Viennese artist, filmmaker and activist who has tirelessly researched the historical and current persecution and exclusion of Roma and Sinti for over two decades. With a multitude of films, exhibitions, posters, catalogs, she documents the extreme violent history and present and intervenes with all means in a discourse marked by sheer racism.
