Lydia Nsiah
For WE DEY X Space, Lydia Nsiah recorded analog materials from the "Queer/ Inter/ Trans*/ Black/ People of Color Artist Resistance" archive on unreliable medium format film. The archive is relatively young and contains footage and documentation of performances, exhibitions, and lectures from recent years made by community members themselves. The conceptual approach of the project is closely related to this fact. The exhibition is a proposal to not let these collected materials fade into oblivion. Complementing her own perspectives in selecting and editing the photos and videos, she decided to refer to the concept of cyclical time - which is visible in the structure of the two video documentaries on display. The photo film starts with the beginnings of WE DEY, while the video starts with one of the last exhibitions and runs backwards. These are collective works shot from different angles by different members of the community.
Lydia Nsiah lives and works in Vienna and abroad. As a visual artist and researcher, she explores the in-between, chasms and gaps in media and knowledge production through film, photography, text and installation. She works, publishes and exhibits internationally on the themes of forgetting and remembering, failure and error, anti-colonial practice, film art and use, and the photo-filmic. She is part of WE ARE SICK OF IT and a member of the Vienna-based video and film artist platform Golden Pixel Cooperative.
