Anna Gaberscik
Anna Gaberscik is an Austrian-US American anti-racism trainer, activist and performer. Anna is the founder of the ‘Through Our Eyes’ project, an interdisciplinary project dedicated to addressing anti-racism, intersectionality and empowerment in various creative forms. From BIPoC storytelling to anti-racism awareness workshops and performance formats, The ‘Through Our Eyes’ project addresses difficult topics through a critical yet creative lens. In her work and workshops, Anna emphasizes the revolutionary potential of preserving and amplifying BIPoC voices, especially when it comes to social justice, and socio-political matters. Various BIPoC cultural phenomena inform and inspire her social justice agenda, many of her cues being taken from African-American diasporic culture. Anna strives to challenge white, patriarchal, heteronormative narratives and discourses in every way possible.
Jury-Statement:
“From a critical anti-discrimination perspective, Anna Gaberscik questions the infrastructures of a safe space. Her film project "Through Our Eyes" aims as a performative documentary to open up spaces that do justice to the complex and contradictory life realities of BIPoC's in Austria. A space whose coordinates, artistic contents as well as formats are not determined or limited by the white gaze. Anna Gaberscik wants to invite BIPoC artists beyond the established cultural narrative to express themselves through dance, visual art, spoken word, poetry or to articulate their concerns through discussions and interview formats. Such a form of empowerment also reflects the misconception of the existing safe spaces of white cultural institutions. To programmatically distance herself from this, she introduces the formulation of safer space.”
