Jelena Popržan

Jelena Popržan, born in 1981 in Novi Sad, is a violist, singer, composer and performer living in Vienna. She studied viola in Belgrade and completed her master's degree at the University of Arts in Graz. She founded her own ensembles such as "Catch-Pop String-Strong" (Austrian World Music Award 2011 and others), "Sormeh" and "Madame Baheux" (Austrian World Music Award 2014). Concert tours followed through Austria, Europe, as far as Mexico, the USA and Peru. Her musical œuvre ranges from classical, world, jazz, political song, music cabaret, folk, rock, new music to voice experimentation. In 2020 she released her first solo album (La Folia), which was acclaimed by the press. She is currently touring with her solo program, the "Jelena Popržan Quartet" and the band "Madame Baheux". As a theater musician and actress, she has collaborated with director Sara Ostertag on several occasions, including Warum das Kind in der Polenta kocht (2014, STELLA Award for Best Stage Music), Muttersprache Mameloschn (2018, Nestroy Award for Best Off-Production) Die Sprache des Wassers (2019, STELLA Award for Best Theater Music) and Das große Heft (2019, nominated for the Nestroy Award and shortlisted for the 2020 Berlin Theatertreffen).
